Polarimeter Data Generator

Instructions

Using the tools below, you should collect sufficient data to determine the specific rotation of a sugar. To do this, you will

  1. "Measure" the transmission of light as a function of angle.
  2. Extract the offset angle for the given based on a measurement of pure water.
  3. Extract the angle of rotation from several measurements of your sugar and different concentrations.
  4. Plot angle of rotation as a function of the concentration for a fixed column height.
  5. Choose and analyze at least one different set of conditions that you can use to confirm your result.

Note: If you restart from scratch (load the page fresh), you will essentially be choosing a new polarimeter from the shelf, which will have a new offset angle between the source and analyzer polarizing filters. You will also be given (possibly) a new sugar. So take care to make sure that your data is self-consistent. It should all be from the same "polarimeter" and for the same sugar!

Your final results should be organized into an excel workbook that can be easily interpreted by someone who has not read the assignment.
