An Unknown Chloride
In this experiment, you will determine the percent mass of an unknown sample that is due to chloride.
The sample is a mixture of NaCl and MgCl2.
The Procedure is as follows:
- Obtain about 1 g of an uknown sample.
- Dissolve the sample in water.
- Precipitate all of the chloride by reacting with an excess fo AgNO3.
- Filter and dry the nacient AgCl(s).
Based on the results, you should be able to calculate
- the number of moles of Cl- in the original sample
- the percent by mass of the original sample due to chlorine
- the percent by mass of the original sample due to sodium chloride
Useful Information
Chlorine | 35.45 g/mol |
NaCl | 58.44 g/mol |
MgCl2 | 95.21 g/mol |
AgCl | 143.32 g/mol |
